"Mounted SAR is a unique way for me to continue serving after my military service and use my riding and dog handling skills."
- Melissa Schmalhorst, STMSAR Founder, Veteran Military Working Dog Handler/Trainer
South Texas Mounted SAR is a non-profit that consist of Veterans with certified mounted search and rescue horses and cadaver dogs. Our mission is to look for people lost or missing in South Texas with law enforcement, forensics and Search and Rescue organizations.
All horses were evaluated and certified by former mounted patrolman, Rick Wagner for Mounted SAR Tech III. Rick also provides units with strong and impact-resistant face shields to protect the horse's eyes and nasal bones. Not only are these reliable protection for mounted police horses but it also protects our horse's eyes when we are searching through tall mesquite and cactus in South Texas.
STMSAR works alongside Remote Wildlands Search & Recovery and Alamo Area Search and Rescue. If you are in need of a mounted resource for your unit, please contact us.
As professionals, we are responsible for attending monthly meetings and training sessions as well as maintaining required certifications. As volunteers, the basic equipment is supplied by each member, and we donate our time, money and fuel.
We rely on fundraising efforts, our sponsors and donations from the public to pay for our training, purchase specialized equipment and provide fuel reimbursement (when possible) for searches and training sessions.
STMSAR is officially based south of San Antonio, Texas and we hold about half of our meetings at the SK Bullnettle Arena. The rest of our meetings are held regionally via teleconference because we have members all over.
